The Agriculture Law Education Initiative and University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension will be hosting six heirs’ property workshops throughout the state in 2025:
- January 22, 2025 – Baltimore City Extension Office
- February 19, 2025 – Kent County Extension Office
- March 29, 2025 – Washington County Extension Office
- April 12, 2025 – Wicomico County Extension Office
- April 30, 2025 – St. Mary’s County Extension Office
- TBD – Zoom
Heirs’ property is property inherited without clear legal ownership, often due to the lack of a will, or property inherited through a will that simply leaves the property equally to all descendants. This shared ownership can lead to legal, financial, and management issues, risking the loss of the land when heirs disagree on selling or developing it. Without clear title, heirs may not be able to sell the property, use the property as collateral for financing, or receive state and federal benefits for farming activities conducted on the property. Heirs also may be at a greater risk of losing the property through a partition action or for failure to pay the property taxes.
The workshops will cover the impacts of heirs’ property, how to prevent creating heirs’ property, and how to resolve heirs’ property in Maryland, including information about Maryland’s Partition of Property Act. Pre-registration is required, and the registration links will be available on the ALEI and UMES Extension websites once registration has opened.
