DESCRIPTION:Box of assorted fruits and vegetables for a CSA share\nAbout this Event: \nThis course will be delivered remotely via Zoom in 2 half-day sessions:\nMarch 16th & March 17th\, 12:30 PM – 4:45 PM \nRegistration Includes:\n• Course Materials (Produce Safety Rule Grower Training Manual v1.2)\n• Course Certificate from the Produce Safety Alliance upon successful completion of course materials \nParticipation requirements for this web-based course include:\n• High-speed internet connection\n• Computer or other appropriate device with webcam and microphone\, which must remain functional for the duration of the course\, to verify participation of each attendee.\n• Course attendance and participation will be monitored through chat\, polling\, and other engagement. Any attendee who does not participate for the duration of the course will not be eligible for certification.\n• Troubleshooting is available for participants with unstable internet. Any make-up sections\, due to lost internet connection etc. must be coordinated individually with the trainers.\n• A hard-copy Produce Safety Rule Grower Training Manual v1.2 will be shipped to each attendee prior to the course administration. Course registration will close approximately 7 working days prior to the course to facilitate book shipment. Please be sure the shipping address you provide at the time of registration is capable of receiving packages.\n• Participants are expected to complete and return course evaluations within one week of completing the course. Learn more about BSAAOs and the Produce Safety Rule from perspectives from industry\, cooperative extension\, and regulatory agencies. \nSpeakers will provide an overview on the Produce Safety Rule and draft guidance to understand the current regulatory framework and requirements\, the basics of how to compost\, benefits of using BSAAOs to the soil and the farm. The intent is to help growers understand risks and benefits of using BSAAOs and how to comply with the current requirements. It will also provide an update on the status of BSAAO Risk Assessment\, associated research\, and discuss the possible future of Subpart F provisions for the use of untreated BSAAO on covered farms. \n$10 ticket fee covers expenses for the provided light breakfast and lunch. This session will also feature a grower presenter\, Tope Fanjingbesi of DoDo Farms\, to discuss her experiences and advice for farm entrepreneurs. \nSpeakers: Margaret (Megan) Todd\, Esq. & Tope Fajingbesi \nTemitope (Tope) Fajingbesi is a U.S. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Nigerian Chartered Accountant. She is also an Africa-focused social entrepreneur and a published author. Prior to joining the IAA\, Tope served several Washington D.C. organizations as an outsourced financial consultant after leaving her full-time position at the American Federation of Teachers as an Assistant Director of Financial Services in 2015. Tope is passionate about serving her communities in Nigeria and the United States. She co-founded United for Kids Foundation\, an international organization committed to creating a better world for children from low-income families through the education\, healthcare and social welfare initiatives in 2002. She also hosted Impact Africa\, a radio program that inspired listeners to participate actively in African development through entrepreneurship from 2013 to 2015. Tope frequently speaks to global audiences with a mission to inspire. She was the keynote speaker at Grand Rapids City High School’s 2017 graduation ceremony\, and has taught financial management courses to female entrepreneurs in Maryland and Washington D.C. through the Latino Economic Development Council since 2012. \nTope is married to Niyi Balogun\, a farmer who manages their joint venture\, Dodo Farms\, a Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) produce farm in Montgomery County Maryland. \nMargaret (Megan) Todd\, Esq. is a Legal Research Associate with the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI). She graduated from the Maryland Carey School of Law and has a background in environmental studies and policy. Biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAOs) are those that come from animals\, like manure or animal mortalities\, and can include pre- and post-consumer waste like table scraps. Proper use of soil amendments is critical for managing soil fertility\, improving soil quality\, and often results in healthier and tastier crops. \nHowever\, soil amendments\, particularly BSAAOs\, that are untreated or inadequately treated prior to application can contain harmful human pathogens that can cause foodborne illness in consumers. This topic is especially relevant to growers of specialty crops that are typically eat raw and produce covered by the FSMA Produce Safety Rule (PSR). \nWorkshop speakers will provide an overview on the PSR and draft guidance from the FDA to understand the current regulatory framework and requirements regarding soil amendments\, the basics of how to compost\, and the benefits of using BSAAOs to the soil and the farm. The intent is to help growers understand risks and benefits of using BSAAOs and how to comply with the current requirements. It will also provide an update on the status of BSAAO Risk Assessment\, associated research\, and discuss the possible future of Subpart F provisions for the use of untreated BSAAO on covered farms. DESCRIPTION:UMES Extension will host an Heirs’ Property Education Workshop on March 28. The event will be held from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the UMES Henson Center Ballroom\, with opening remarks expected at 8:30 a.m. \n\n\n\nHeirs’ property is family-owned property inherited by multiple generations without the formal legal proceedings necessary to prove ownership. As a result\, the heirs lack the clear title necessary to prove their ownership status. This means they may not be able to sell the property\, use the property as collateral for financing\, or receive USDA benefits for farming activities conducted on the property. It also means they may be at a greater risk of losing the property through a partition action or because they fail to pay their property taxes. \n\n\n\nCOST: $10 per person\, includes breakfast and lunch \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION: Pre-registration is required and ends March 22. No walk-ups will be accepted.

The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires \n\n\n\n\n‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ \n\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect at the PSA Grower Training Course?\n\n\n\nThe trainers will cover content contained in these eight modules: \n\n\n\n• Introduction to Produce Safety \n\n\n\n• Role of Maryland Dept. of Agriculture and On-Farm Readiness Reviews \n\n\n\n• Worker Health\, Hygiene\, and Training \n\n\n\n• Soil Amendments \n\n\n\n• Wildlife\, Domesticated Animals\, and Land Use \n\n\n\n• Agricultural Water (Part I: Production Water; Part II: Postharvest Water) \n\n\n\n• Postharvest Handling and Sanitation \n\n\n\n• How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan \n\n\n\nIn addition to learning about produce safety best practices\, key parts of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements are outlined within each module. There will be time for questions and discussion\, so participants should come prepared to share their experiences and produce safety questions.
